This method of couples and marriage counseling was developed by Susan Johnson, EdD, of the Ottawa Family Institute in Ottawa, Canada. I am the first Certified Emotionally Focused Couples Therapist in the state of Minnesota.
I am a member of the International Center of Excellence for Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT). I have done extensive training in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy at Tri EFT Allaint University in San Francisco, California.
In using emotionally focused couple therapy, I teach couples to understand how their negative patterns towards each other causes each partner to distance from, or to fight against, the other person. In emotionally focused couples therapy, partners and spouses learn to become more compassionate with each other, they develop skills to help them feel closer with each other, and they feel more secure and safe in their marriages and relationships. Couples accomplish this by practicing how to communicate with each other during the sessions. They learn to talk to each other in a way that is respectful, truthful, and with the intent to become closer as a couple. The negative patterns that bring the couple into marriage therapy gets reduced or disappears. This method of couples and marriage therapy is very successful and couples are satisfied with the progress they make after being in marriage counseling with me.
